Shop Smart. Support Working Families.

This back-to-school season, we are asking members to skip shopping at Target and consider spending their money at other retailers. The AFT, in consultation with our partners in the Twin Cities, passed a resolution demanding the Minneapolis-based business speak up against the atrocities being committed in its own backyard by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and we called for a comprehensive back-to-school campaign if it failed to take meaningful action. After Target refused to heed the demands of Twin Cities organizers and stand up to ICE, the AFT passed another resolution urging members to shop locally instead of at Target.

Now many of our members are looking for back-to-school retailers that support union values. To help members locate retailers, we’ve compiled a list of more than 5,000 stores with a heavily unionized workforce. While not all the locations included on the list are unionized, all the retailers listed employ a significant number of unionized employees.

We urge our members to support retailers that do not actively work to undermine public education, our nation’s democracy and the right of workers to unionize. Instead of shopping at Target, we ask that you consider shopping local or with a retailer that supports union values. If you prefer to shop online, please consider shopping at Costco’s website, which sells many items comparable to those available online at Target.
